Whitestaunton Manor House. The Elizabethan additions to the house have concealed its earlier plan. The roof and the present main entrance appear to be of early fifteenth-century date. The existence of medieval parts can be seen on the N side in the embattled porch and attached chimney. This evidence is borne out by the survival of the fine 14th century Hall roof, with collar beams and arched braces and cusped wind braces. There have been several stages of construction, the earliest of which seems to have been in the present kitchen wing in the NE quarter of the house. Here there is the roof described by Pevsner, which is of hammer beam construction although by brackets have gone. Windows of 14th century type overlook the cental courtyard. panelling in a ground floor room in the NW bears the date 1577. See ground photograph AO/60/272/6. Manor House from the NW. Part of the stable range to the east of the house appears to be contemporary with the Elizabethan part of the house. This house is as described above. It is of outstanding architectual interest. See AO/65/231/8 for roof in 19th century. {3}

Dendrochronology gives a date of 1447-92 for the felling of roof timbers. {4}
