The public accessibility of this site is unknown or has not been checked. Please ask locally and do not visit without permission. [Information last updated on 21 May 2003]
Roman remains, quern and foundations found but no pavement. Visited at the end of the war. Roman pottery, lias roof tiles etc found. Details in Sherborne Castle Museum. No more information at the museum. The farmer has ploughed up slabs of lias from this area, but has noticed nothing also of significance. Nothing visible on the ground. {1}
In 1911 this site yielded RB pottery which went to Sherborne Museum, together with a note that several trenches had revealed no foundations and that a settlement area marked by black soil, extended to the SE. Cropmarks in APs of 1970 show enclosures and ditches of IA-RB character, and also suggest that the occupied area extended W to link up with PRN 54794. The cropmarks and examination of the 1911 pottery suggested the existence of a settlement occupied from the middle pre-Roman Iron age to the C4. {2}
Aerial photographs show a much larger area of cropmarks which probably extend to join PRNs 54794 and 55111. {5}
An evaluation excavation in 2000 (PRN 57054) identified many features including ditches, pits, postholes and two graves. Spot dating of artefacts identified a late Roman date. {7}
