A valley cut into Pleistocene or Post-Glacial outwash gravels was partially found running south-west from the site of the Palace Mill. Deposits from the construction of the Bishops Palace, Palace Mill and growing Medieval town were found on the valley bottom. The waterlogged state of the area to the south and east of the Palace Mill site showed great potential for the preservation of medieval organic artefacts and structures. {1}
