A turnpike road of the Bridgwater Trust. The Thurloxton to Bridgwater length was turnpiked in 1730. The Bristol Road section, which ran via Crandon Bridge, was only extended as far as Puriton. The remaining section to the East Brent parish boundary was turnpiked in 1759 to join the continuation of the Bristol Trust (PRN 12883). The North Petherton to Huntworth Gate section was rebuilt in 1921-22 using experimental materails. The road was realigned at Compass in 1957 and the M5 link was added in 1969.
A number of other diversions have been undertaken, some of which involved the Unemployment Relief Works of the 1920s. In most cases the original road exists. {1}
Photos exist of the road before various C20 improvements. {2}
