A watching brief was undertaken in January 2005 during the extension, into a courtyard, of the City Arms, Wells. The footings trench was 1m deep. No evidence of structures was revealed and a layer of made-up ground, some 0.45m was noted overlying layers of clay, natural subsoil and bedrock. {1}
