Site of four balance or caisson locks, which were part of the unfinished Dorset and Somerset canal. Locks survive as a series of four large pits that would have contained each lock and retaining walls on one side of each pit. Site runs north west from the edge of the disused railway embankment up the hillside and joins the earthwork remains of the canal, which heads west. {1}
